HUDSON, NEW YORK
Warren Street in Hudson, NY

Mohican Indians originally inhabited the area. During the 17th century the Dutch settled there. In 1785, seafaring and merchant Quakers from Massachusetts and Rhode Island purchased the present day site of Hudson, then known as Claverack Landing. That same year, Hudson was incorporated and became the third city in the State of New York.

Early industry revolved around shipbuilding and related commerce as well as whaling and shipping of agricultural products and lumber from Columbia County and western Massachusetts. Hudson kept up with the commercial times and maintained a leadership role in area steamboat shipping and railroad commerce.

Being a seaport, Hudson attracted its share of vice and illegal activities. These activities continued in the city until well into the 20th century when changes in Hudson's commercial and transportation industries caused the city to go into commercial decline.

In the late 20th century Hudson reemerged as a vital commercial player when new industries and commerce began to move back into the area. The scenic city, with its wealth of history and its largely intact architecture, became a perfect location for artists and galleries, specialty shops, antique dealers, and upscale bistros and restaurants. A stroll down Warren Street attests to the vitality and resilience of this great Hudson River city.
